One Direction’s ‘Kiss You’ Video Pits Movie Homages Against Nipple Tweaks

The big buzz in pop culture this week, amongst the Kimye baby, and Taylor/Harry and Bieber/Selena breakups is the One Direction video for their ‘Kiss You’ song. A lot of the talk is about the attention-grabbing nipple tweaking in the video. But the entire framework of the video is actually around 50s & 60s movie references. So, we decided to weigh movie homages versus nipple tweaks to what wins out? Let’s do a blow by blow and see…

The video begins with a clear reference to Hitchcock’s ‘To Catch A Thief,‘ with some of the guys driving on a greenscreen coastal highway with darling Harry creeping up from behind Zayn – on the same motorcycle – and that’s when the fun begins. Harry shows his “twisted” fascination with nipples. It happens so quick, so here’s a screenshot from :40. This is nipple tweak #1 and the first movie.

Movie Homage #1: To Catch A Thief

Movie Homage #2: Jailhouse Rock (:41)

The set is almost identical to Elvis Presley’s ‘Jailhouse Rock,’ and they perform some of his signature moves throughout the video.

Movie Homage #3: A Hard Day’s Night (:47)

This pose is a callback to The Beatles ‘A Hard Day’s Night‘ and we know they’re not egotistical enough to compare themselves to the Beatles. They’re British, so ostensibly, they’re humble, right?

Movie #4: Ski Party (:57)

We’re almost 100% that this is a reference to the 1965 Frankie Avalon film ‘Ski Party,’ where all the kids from the beach go skiing in the winter.

Movie Homage #5: Bond’s Thunderball (:49)

Skinny ties, vests and swaggy faces make up their best Bond impression.

Movie Homage #6: Blue Hawaii Meets Doris Day (1:29)

Here’s another Elvis bit that was originally a musical film. Think Pitch Perfect or High School musical, but in Hawaii and with a leading military man. Also, shirtless 1D frolicking at the beach is a reference to Doris Day flicks.

Here’s reference to another musical, specifically the number in South Pacific, “There’s Nothin’ LIke A Dame.”
