Get In Tune: Our Favorite Acoustic Albums
By

.
This week, Justin Bieber announced plans to release his second unplugged album in January, joining a long line of artists who have made amazing collections without running up a crazy electricity bill.
.
Here we recap some of our favorite acoustic albums that range grunge icons to today’s most popular songwriters. Justin, you’ve got a lot to live up to with this album, so good luck!
.
Bright Eyes — Back in 2005, Bright Eyes released two albums: The electronic-influenced Digital Ash In A Digital Urn and the acoustic collection I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning. Both have held up well, but looking back, this stripped-down disc features some of his most powerful material to date, such as “We Are Nowhere And It’s Now” and “Poison Oak.” Alienation never sounded this transcendent.
.
Elliott Smith — Elliott Smith was still a relatively unknown songwriter back in 1995 when he released his self-titled album; however, things didn’t stay that way for long after people heard it. This extremely moody album featured heartfelt meditations like “Needle In The Hay,” which were dark and melancholy but also featured an underlying theme of hopefulness. Sadly, the latter feeling didn’t last.
.
Nirvana — Nirvana were thought of as a loud, overdriven act when they released MTV Unplugged In New York in 1994. Kurt Cobain & Company’s somber takes on “All Apologies” and “The Man Who Sold The World” confirmed them as the most exciting band in rock and showed that they were as versatile as they were visceral in the process.
.
Monsters Of Folk — What do you get when you put Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, M. Ward and production guru Mike Mogis in the same room? You get an extremely accomplished album that bridges the common ground between all four artists without sacrificing an ounce of artistry or integrity.
.
Alice In Chains — Alice In Chains’ Sap EP wasn’t nearly as well-received as Nirvana Unplugged but this five-song, largely acoustic collection still sounds as good today as it did when it was recorded almost two decades ago. It also showcases the incredible vocal range of the band’s fallen frontman Layne Staley.
.
Bruce Springsteen — Bruce Springsteen is one of the most prolific artists of all-time, but his ’90s and ’00s output has been a little spotty, making We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions even more impressive. The Boss’ only album of material that he didn’t write is an amazing reinterpretation of classic tunes by Pete Seeger and ushered in a new era in Springsteen’s career.
.
Mumford & Sons — Mumford & Sons seemed to come out of nowhere two years ago to release Sigh No More, and for many music listeners the album sounded like a gift from God. Rarely does a debut album come along that’s as fully formed and engaging as this one and while we love their latest disc Babel their first collection will always have a special spot in our hearts.
.
Beck — Beck is an amazing example of an artist who was born in the alternative scene but managed to segue into serious artistry — and the real turning point in his career was his 2002 collection Sea Change, which is full of moving but somber songs such as “Lost Cause” and “The Golden Age.”
.
Bob Dylan — We couldn’t write an article about memorable acoustic albums without paying tribute to the man who popularized the genre, Bob Dylan. Although Dylan has tons of legendary collections, we’d recommend you start with Blood On The Tracks and go from there.

5 Things We Really Wish Bands Would Stop Doing
By
Emily Zemler
•

.
Last week, Paramore announced that they will unveil their fourth album next year. They also announced that they will be naming the disc after themselves … and personally, we absolutely hate it when artists self-title albums that aren’t their debut. This got us thinking about some of the other annoying things musicians have been doing lately. And we want them to stop. So, bands and artists, please consider this a helpful guide on what not to do. Thanks in advance.
.
1. Self-titling albums that are not your first album
.
Why would you self-title your third, fourth or, if you are The Cure, 12th album? We know that you are trying to say “This is who we are now so please ignore our formative releases and pretend that this is the album that defines us” but what you’re actually saying is “We’re too lazy to come up with a real album title.” It makes sense to self-title your debut, because that’s the world’s first introduction to you, but it’s just obnoxious to assume that a record four discs into your career is in anyway more self-defining than your prior. If you wrote a book, you wouldn’t name it after yourself, right? No. This note is especially for Paramore and their upcoming fourth album… Paramore.
.
2. Unnecessarily drawing out your album promo
.

.
Paging Carly Rae Jepsen (and every other pop artist in America). It is not news when you release your single cover art or when you “reveal” a still from an upcoming music video. Just give us the info, all at once. It doesn’t make you more newsworthy when you announce an album, album title, a tracklisting, album cover art, single, single cover art, single video teaser, single video and single remix as separate pieces of news. Let’s be realistic: It’s all the same thing!
.
3. Faking us out with “special guests”
.
Did you realize that The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney is on Ke$ha’s new album? No? Well that’s because you would have no idea unless someone told you that he plays drums on one song on the disc. Does that make him a special guest on the album? Not exactly. Iggy Pop, who sings on one of the pop star’s new tracks, is a special guest, because we can actually tell when we hear the song. As in, it makes the song bigger than it would be without him. No one ever really talked about how Tommy Lee played drums on the Jack’s Mannequin album, much like Carney, which means they don’t really qualify as special guests.
.
4. Re-packaging old albums as new releases
.
Did we really need any of the music on Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up or on Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die (Paradise Edition)? Not at all, but the artists and their record labels certainly made you think you did. It’s been a trend over the past few years for musicians to release an album and then re-release it a few months later with a few bonus tracks and maybe a DVD. Most of those bonus tracks are usually crap (eh-hem Nicki). Why do you need another copy of the same album? Let’s stop worrying about releasing every single track you’ve ever made in the studio and start worrying about putting out good ones worth the fans’ time.
.
5. Wearing baseball caps onstage
.

.
This is the most inane of these grievances ,but also the most annoying. It’s just not appropriate for a musician to wear a baseball cap onstage. It covers your face and makes you look like you don’t care. Jack Antonoff from fun. recently donned a red hat during the KIIS Jingle Ball and in the mix of all the dolled up pop stars and Ne-Yo’s fedora, it just looked lazy (sorry to single you out, Jack, but come on). Let’s save the baseball hats for baseball games, please.

Taylor Swift and Harry Styles' Karaoke Date: One Direction Star and Conor Kennedy's Ex Party, Hold Hands
Taylor Swift and Harry Styles have an unfair advantage when it comes to karaoke.
After One Direction's Madison Square Garden concert Monday night, Harry, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson hit up New York City's Hudson Hotel with the "I Knew You Were Trouble" singer for some late-night fun.
Taylor herself had just come from a gala where she was honored by—awkward alert?—ex Conor Kennedy's family.
Harry and Taylor spent Sunday together, too
In a series of blurry pictures, Harry, 18, and Taylor, 22, can be seen holding hands as they show off their vocal skills. An eyewitness tells E! News Taylor "spent the early part of the night hanging out with the parents, but once karaoke came on, she and Harry joined [other 1D members] onstage for the rest of the night." For one of the last karaoke songs, Taylor and a gal-pal sang a One Direction song, according to a witness.
A One Direction fan account on Twitter captured Taylor and the guys paying homage to another boy band: the Backstreet Boys! In one shot, Taylor, Harry and Niall appear to be quite invested in a karaoke performance of BSB's 1998 hit "I Want It That Way."
"Haylor is real, y'all," Sunny Jacob, a 1D fan, tweeted along with a picture of the duo.

A witness tells E! News Emma Roberts
and a girlfriend were also in attendance at the karaoke get-together.
At the end of the night, when the light cames on, the One Direction
guys, Taylor and pals took a turn on Playstation. Harry and Taylor "were
clearly having fun," says a witness.
Later on, shortly after 4 a.m., Harry and Taylor, holding hands again, were spotted going back to the Red singer's hotel.
The next morning around 11:30 a.m., Harry and Taylor were snapped leaving the Greenwich Hotel separately.

Rihanna 777 Post-Tour Reflections: Would We Do It Again? Hell, Yes.
By
Emily Zemler
•

.
Last night, as I was in a taxi returning to the hotel from Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club, where Rihanna held her final 777 Tour afterparty, my Editor emailed me asking for a final piece on the experience. In the moment I was concerned that I was still too in the thick of the tour and too caught up in the experience to have any sense of reflection. But after four hours of sleep and another journey to another airport to return home, I think I have a moderate sense of what just went down on the Rihanna plane. And it’s clear that this tour, which started as evident gimmick to get album press, has become something greater and more impactful than originally intended.
.
This tour will, certainly, have lasting consequences on both the music industry and the press world. No experiment is without its results, without some sort of conclusion that either yields change or doesn’t. Several managers and publicists emailed me while on the tour, asking “Are you dying?” and “What the hell is going on?” Several noted that they’d spoken about similar tours with artists they work with, wondering whether this could be done differently or more effectively in the future. If we suddenly see an influx of creative album promotional gimmicks, we can thank Roc Nation and Island Def Jam, as well as Rihanna for being a “willing” participant.
.
Which brings us to the issue of Rihanna. The singer was reportedly pitched the idea of this tour on her last album, Talk That Talk, and she turned it down, only to acquiesce now on Unapologetic. Theoretically, she is a great artist with which to undertake such a project. She seems fun – at least based on her Instagram and Twitter feeds, which are filled with images of her blowing pot smoke out of her mouth and lying naked on furniture. She seems like someone you might be able to party with. But the problem is that even if we assumed there was a chance she’d hot box the plane, that wasn’t the real reason the journalists went on the trip (it might have been why the fans attended, though).
.
I read a comparison on ABC News yesterday that noted the correlations between this tour and the press who follow the presidential campaigns, pointing out notable similarities between the experiences of the music journalists onboard the now-infamous Rihanna plane and those tailing Republican candidate Mitt Romney. And although I see these congruencies, ultimately the results don’t match up. The reporters riding along with Romney had something to report on as they moved around the U.S., each rally and appearance yielding new information and quotes. Rihanna says the exact same thing onstage every night while playing almost the same set, and there is little variance besides the venue and her outfit. (Our favorite thing to do on the plane was to mimic Rihanna’s intro to “Say My Name” by shouting “What did you call me?” and “It’s not Hey-na-a, it’s Rihanna” at each other.)
.
There are a lot of ways this could have worked better and more smoothly, which is not to undermine the fact that this was an impressively run trip, with elements that absolutely found control in the chaos of 250 international travelers, some of whom did not need as much luggage as they hauled around. Roll call, assigned buses, pre-printed plane tickets, hotel key cards laid out by last name and ongoing email communication expedited the arduous processes. But was it too many people? Did efficiency and logic occasionally vanish? Were we all at the mercy of an artist who would rather go lingerie shopping in Paris or hang out with her Battleship co-star Brooklyn Decker in Toronto than participate in the tour that was literally about her? Probably.
.
In the end, the 777 Tour turned into a story about the media rather than Rihanna herself. It became a mirror into the way the contemporary, Internet-based press covers an event. If you read the articles from the last week you can see the coverage devolve, transform from peppy dispatches and excited photos to stressed-out musings on our purpose here and queries on what it all means. Reading back now, I can see how the tone of my own coverage changed. By the last day, because no one could get a quote from Rihanna, the journalists were all interviewing each other.
The coverage was also nearly immediate – the video of the Australian streaker made it online within an hour of us landing in London. I sent photos and updates via email over an international roaming plan on my cell phone while on buses and standing in venues. I wasn’t the only one who wrote almost their entire tour coverage on their iPhone, too. The Rihanna plane became its own meme, a story that has been reported on widely as if it was an actual hostage situation requiring constant updates. Jokes about Ben Affleck using the story as his follow-up film to Argo abound and not for nothing (Rihan-Argo has been the name bandied about). I’m surprised my parents didn’t tie a yellow ribbon to a tree in our yard.
.
The journalists were the story because we created the story via Twitter, Instagram and our own articles, offering an instant look inside a bizarre and seemingly desperate situation. When we landed in New York someone emailed me, “#Rihannajailbreak” and everyone I ran into at the New York show kept saying “She was on the plane,” like I was a character on Lost. Admiration for our survival has been palpable. And that’s fair – this was by far the hardest tour I’ve ever been on (and I’ve toured with artists quite a bit, including earlier this year with Linkin Park), and it’s definitely the most physically grueling thing I’ve ever done.
.
It may be weeks before my body fully recovers, which is to say nothing about my mental state. I can’t promise not to snap into an altered sociopathic reality the next time “Diamonds” comes on the radio. And to those who criticize our public complaining, I can only say that we needed Twitter and photocopied Rihanna “Missing” posters and Instagrammed shots of the prison food we were fed to make it through this without totally losing it. I cried twice in Berlin and didn’t know it was happening until someone pointed out the tears pouring down my face. One journalist openly wept on the way to London. Another puked into her airplane blanket during in-air mutiny that occurred as we left Berlin.
.
Does this make us entitled and coddled? Should we be more grateful for the opportunity? I have no idea. I think it’s clear that most of us wouldn’t survive a real hostage or prison situation, especially if our iPhones got taken away. But if you weren’t there, you can’t really know what it was like to stay awake for 28 hours over the course of three countries all because some pop star wanted to promote an album that was already guaranteed to go No. 1 worldwide upon release and didn’t respect the press who gave up seven days of their lives enough to even answer one question about it. None of us cared about talking to Rihanna; we just wanted to sleep and eat, and that’s where the real breakdown happened.
.
One of Rihanna’s label reps from Island Def Jam joked as we touched down in New York that he’d see us next year on the 888 Tour, eight shows in eight days on a cruise ship around the Caribbean. Obviously this is not real, but despite the fact that my body has never been in such extreme distress, I think I’d be in if it was. The 777 Tour is going to herald something, it’s going to be the watermark for future album promotional concepts, and it feels important that both Myspace and myself participated. I’m glad to have been one of the guinea pigs. Plus, I learned that it’s complete bullsh-t that you can’t use electronic devices while a plane takes off. All that aside, though, I’m now going to sleep for three days and when I wake up I’m going to listen exclusively to death metal for the rest of the year.

Rihanna 777 Tour Day 6: Mutiny on the 777
By
Emily Zemler
•

.
What happens when you crowd 150 journalists and a bunch of fans on a 777 jet and don’t deliver on their expectations? Mutiny, that’s what. It started with a few chants of “b-roll” by some of the videographers as a joke, escalated as one of the Australian radio journalists streaked fully naked through the plane and cultivated with the entire economy section shouting “just one quote” and “save our jobs” during the flight to London.
If you think this would make Rihanna finally appear, you’re wrong. She is on the plane, but despite the cries and pushing throngs of writers, photographers and videographers, the captain of the ship never revealed herself. Her security team did, however, as did her label reps and management. Everyone was eventually told to return to their seats, but no one has calmed down. A flight attendant poured anyone who wanted it shots of Jay-Z’s cognac brand D’ussd — the same stuff Rihanna offered the fans on her first day on the jet. Some journalists got the flight attendant to hand them full bottles of wine to take to their seats and Tim, the Australian streaker, is now the second most famous person on this plane.
.

.
So what now? Will Rihanna ever appear? Is she too afraid of what we will do? Does she feel like she owes us something? Stay tuned, I suppose. If we go down, at least we went down swinging.

Listen: Big Sean Drops New Single ‘Guap’
By

Big Sean
.
Big Sean has appeared on basically every hip-hop track that’s come out this year, but now the rapper finally has one of his own. Sean unleashed “Guap,” the first single from his upcoming new album Hall of Fame, which will be out in December.
.
The number was produced Key Wanye and Young Chop. Big Sean spits lines about – what else? – money. “I’ma throw money in the air like I’m tryna pay the sky,” he raps on the number, noting that he needs a new crib for his mom (don’t we all?). Best part? Sean raps, “I need a 17-car garage.” Listen below:
.
.
Hall of Fame will be out on December 18 via G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam Recordings. The disc will be his second on Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label, following his debut Finally Famous, which spawned a bunch of hit singles, including “My Last” and “Marvin & Chardonnay.” The rapper is planning a “Hall of Fame” tour in support of the release as well.
.
Big Sean recently told MTV News, “I’ve been in the studio with [Kanye], talking with ‘Ye, building ideas with No I.D., even with Nas, with other people and really talking to ‘em and soaking up where their minds is at. Then taking that and applying it to what I know myself. It ain’t no choice but to be good.” He added, “I also have a sense of how people look at me, just by going on tour, my first solo tour, sold-out tour and seeing the people and kids who looked at me as a role model. That’s when I realized when you got the mic, you got the crowd, you gotta say something, or else your moment in time is wasted. It’s just a whole different thought mentality.”

Ellen DeGeneres Forces Taylor Swift To Talk A Walk Down Ex-Boyfriend Memory Lane
By

.
Last night, Taylor Swift stopped by Ellen DeGeneres’ TV show to promote her new album Red. However, Swift seemed legitimately surprised when the host decided to play a game with her that saw the pop star’s long list of exes flash on a screen in an effort to pinpoint who the song “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is about.”
.
While being in the public eye and talking openly about her past relationships makes Swift’s personal life somewhat notable, DeGeneres was relentless, insisting that Swift dated Zac Efron despite multiple denials by Swift. Then, Swift didn’t want to play the game DeGeneres improvised, “”Ok, ring it on three different guys. We’ll narrow it down,” DeGeneres says. “So ring it three different times. Then it’s still out there. We still don’t know.”
.
From there, the screen flashed images of Swift with Lautner, John Mayer and Joe Jonas (as well as some obvious red herrings like Danny Devito). When Swift wouldn’t ring the bell, DeGeneres took it out of her hand and rang it for her. It is interesting to note that Swift seemed most off-guard when a photo of Cory Monteith appeared on the screen and that DeGeneres eschewed showing a photo of Jake Gyllenhaal despite the duo’s well-documented relationship.
.
“This makes be feel so bad about myself. Every time I come here you put like a different dude up there on the screen. And it just makes me really question like what I stand for as a human being,” Swift said after the game finally ended and while we do feel bad for her being put in this position, we also think that when you’re writing songs specifically about your break-ups and dating high-profile actors it seems inevitable.
.
In other words, Taylor, if you want to avoid these scenarios either stop writing about relationships or date a normal guy…a blogger, perhaps? For more Taylor Swift, check out her Myspace radio channel.

Check Out The Brand New Taylor Swift Track “State Of Grace”
By
Jonah Bayer
•

Stuart Wilson/Getty Images Entertainment
.
Taylor Swift fans, get pumped, because you can hear a song called “State Of Grace” from her upcoming album Red today, a week before the disc is officially released.
.
Musically, the track reminds us of U2, with a steady backbeat and delay-driven guitars. Swift croons, “This is a state of grace/ This is a worth while fight/ Love is a ruthless game/ Unless you play it good and right.” Admittedly, this track is a little bit more rock-oriented than some of Swift’s past material, but it’s still pop-oriented enough to sound perfect in an arena.
.
“State Of Grace” now joins “I Knew You Were In Trouble,” “Red,” “Begin Again,” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” to give us a pretty good glimpse of what Red will sound like…and if the rest of the album is on par with these tracks, it looks like Katy Perry and Rihanna have some serious competition in the pop princess department.

Rihanna Premieres Her New Single “Diamonds”
By
Jonah Bayer

.
We know the phrase “good morning” is thrown around pretty liberally, but today is extra good. Rihanna literally just premiered her new single “Diamonds” and trust us, if this doesn’t make your Wednesday feel like a Friday, then we don’t know what will.
.
As far as the track itself goes, it’s the perfect song to set the tone for Rihanna’s next disc and sees her singing, “shine bright like a diamond” over an ultra catchy hook. “You’re a shooting star I see, a vision of ecstasy/When you hold me I’m alive, we’re like diamonds in the sky,” she continues as her voice also sparkles like a precious stone. Part ballad, part anthem, we’ve got a feeling you’ll be hearing a lot of this song in the future.
.
Details about Rihanna’s upcoming seventh studio album are still scarce, but a press release promised “details to be announced in the weeks and months ahead.” The release adds that Rihanna worked with the Norwegian songwriting team Stargate on the track who previously collaborated with RiRi on hits like “Don’t Stop The Music” and “Only Girl (In The World)”.

Future Hits: P!nk Is Gonna “Try” For Another Top 5 Hit
By
Kevin Tustin

P!nk
.
This week’s batch of future hits features a double appearance by Ne-Yo and repeat acts including Rihanna and David Guetta. It’s not that there isn’t anything better to write about, but these acts are surefire hit makers. But watch out for P!nk, whose latest single, Blow Me (One Last Kiss), just hit the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and she’s sure to have another hit with her new song, Try.
.

P!nk
.
Reeling in success from her new album “The Truth About Love,” which is
set to top the Billboard 200 next week, P!nk’s newest single from the
set has already peaked in the top ten on the iTunes store. Try is
a mid-tempo motivational song that is heavy on lyrical repetition — the
last 40 seconds is the same lyrics over and over again — but a good
follow-up to the more angry Blow Me. The single album art looks like Kylie Minogue’s cover for her album “X,” doesn’t it?
..

Ne-Yo
.
Featured on a few hits within the past two years, Ne-Yo’s second single from his upcoming album R.E.D., Let Me Love You, could be his first successful solo single since Mad or Miss Independent.
A great beat and run-of-the-mill love lyrics could elevate this track
to the top, but could he face competition with his collaboration on
David Guetta’s latest track?
.
David Guetta’s re-release “Nothing But the Beat 2.0″ features the new song Play Hard.
.
David Guetta has been having his best year yet. Following collaborations with Sia on Titanium and She Wolf (Falling to Pieces), his unofficially released track, Play Hard, is hitting the overseas charts right after She Wolf was
released. No shortage of dancing here as Guetta teams up with Ne-Yo and
Akon once more for that smooth r&b vibe on this inevitable club hit
which samples Alice Deejay’s Better Off Alone. Those who remember that late-90’s hit will really appreciate the throwback vibe on the track
..

Rihanna
Rihanna, Diamonds.
Less than a week after winning the VMA for We Found Love and the release of her single Cockiness (Love It), Rihanna is set to release her new single Diamonds
this week from her upcoming seventh studio album. Although the track
hasn’t been released yet, it features a collaboration with latest Guetta
muse Sia, who has reportedly penned the track. Could this lead-off
single be a runaway hit like We Found Love? We’ll have to wait and see.
.
Come back next week when we’ll take a look at what’s bubbling under the surface.

2012 MTV VMA’s Recap: The Big Moments, The Fashion Picks, and List of Winners!

.
You can say what you want about The Oscars, The Grammys, or The Emmys, but there’s always a party going on at the VMA’s, and this year’s event didn’t disappoint. Honoring the year’s best in music videos, MTV’s annual celebration brought the celebrities, musicians, and even some little people, out to celebrate the art form that made MTV a household name. So just what went down at the event, hosted by funnyman Kevin Hart? Check out our breakdown of the night’s best, brightest, and WTF-iest of the 2012 Video Music Awards.
.
First things first, let’s dive right into the fashion. There were some hits (Rihanna), some misses (Emma Watson!?), and even a few “meh’s” (sorry, Alicia Keys). But there’s no denying the variety of looks hitting the red carpet this year. Check out our roundup of looks.
.
Amber Rose debuted her baby bump, with Wiz Khalifa by her side. Considering she’s got quite the bump going, she looks pretty awesome.
.

.
Katy Perry glammed it up, in a big way, in this vintage looking frock.
.

(Christopher Polk/Getty Images)
.
Taylor Swift had a wardrobe change for her performance, but her red carpet look was sleek and sexy.
.

(Christopher Polk/Getty Images)
.
It’s her, Miley! She debuted her much talked-about new ‘do here, wearing a plunging black gown.
.

(Kevin Masur/Getty Images)
.
Ke$ha looks pretty cleaned up! Maybe that’s why we almost didn’t recognize her?
.

(Christopher Polk/Getty Images)
.
Demi Lovato is going for a bit of a dominatrix look here, and we’re not so sure it’s working out…
.

(Kevin Masur/Getty Images)
.
Oh hey, Ri Ri. You rock that white frock, girl.
.

(Christopher Polk/Getty Images)
.
Sorry, Emma. This look ain’t workin for ya.
.

(Christopher Polk/Getty Images)
.
Alicia Keys’ gown is a bit on the frumpy side, but since she’s a relatively new mom, we’ll let that slide!
.

(Christopher Polk/Getty Images)
.
Those One Direction boys sure do know how to clean up, don’t they?! Just adorable!
.

(Christopher Polk/Getty Images)
.
Her simple get-up certainly wasn’t a show-stopper, but Pink’s onstage look was worth noting.
.

(Christopher Polk/Getty Images)
.
Rashida Jones went for a leather look, and it didn’t look all that comfortable. But you go, Rashida! Good effort.
.

(Kevin McDonald/Getty Images)
.
And while she didn’t take home a trophy (spoiler alert!), Taylor Swift’s performance outfit was a real winner!
.

(Christopher Polk/Getty Images)
.
And now to the main event! Making a grand entrance as only she could (or maybe Madonna), Rihanna, decked in red, treated the crowd to an awesome laser-filled performance, which almost looked like something out of a Michael Jackson video. She was later joined by A$AP Rocky before heading into the crowd serenade the audience with her hit “We Found Love,” which brought the audience to dance party, USA. It was an awesome Studio 54 moment, and Ri Ri killed it.
.

.
Host Kevin Hart made an entrance almost as grand as Rihanna, escorted by a wee secret service, as a nod to the Democratic National Convention going down in Charlotte. “I’m gonna need a little security, and they took me too seriously.” Really, little people jokes? No.
.
Hart’s monologue touched on many controversial topics -
.
Drake and Chris Brown’s beef: “It was all about recycling!”
.
Frank Ocean’s recent outing: “I commend you!”
.
New mom Snooki: “She didn’t make a mistake, the baby daddy did.” “Don’t spray him orange, and give him that hairstyle the Jersey Shore guys have…”
.
KStew’s cheating: “She made a mistake! Get over it!”
.
And then- BAM – stage dive time! The jump into the crowd seemed to be one a lot of people were making this year, and Hart was happy to start the trend.
.

.
Katy Perry (debuting a new hairstyle, as she often does) presented the best pop video award to the Brit boys of One Direction, who took the trophy and looked absolutely adorable doing so. Seriously, give us a call, boys. They gushed about their love for the VMA’s, and didn’t make it a full minute before breaking the trophy. Oh, boys. Be more careful!
.
Wowza. Miley Cyrus debuted her off-the-wall haircut which looked almost identical to acrobatic-loving Pink, who was soaring through the air in no time. She treated the fans to the first taste of her new single “Blow Me One Last Kiss,” which was awesome. And filled with curse words.
.

.
But the weirdest moment? Her dancers clad in ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ lips. How’d they see anything?
.

.
‘The X-Factor’ judge Demi Lovato (set to be back on our TV’s soon) and Brit sensation (and buxom blonde) Rita Ora presented the award for best male video to Chris Brown who was sporting some strange dyed locks and sunglasses. He actually directed his winning video himself. He’s nothing if not multi-talented, we suppose?
.

.
Zoe Saldana (falling flat in her fringe-y gown) intro’ed man of the hour Frank Ocean who almost appeared to be performing in Disneyland. What was going on there? He did a partially acoustic take on his hit “Thinkin’ ‘Bout You,” and while his space-age scene was a little strange (was he paying homage to Zoe Saldana in ‘Star Trek’?), he sounded great.
.

.
On-screen couple Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg (of ‘Celeste and Jesse Forever’) got kinda weird – rapping and yolo-ing it up behind some hipster frames. And they handed off the best hip hop popcorn to Drake (wheelchair Jimmy!) and Lil’ Wayne, who brought everyone onstage to accept the award with them. But Wayne couldn’t be bothered to take off his headphones. Dude jammed out to his iPod the entire time. Was he listening to Drake?
.

.
In a flash, One Direction appeared from nowhere to take the boy band reigns from the dudes of the 90’s. Even the fierce five got in on the fun – singing along to every word. It was, in a word, adorable.
.

.

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)
.
Rebel Wilson (the greatest ever) took the stage in a sexy bod beach cover up with other of-the-moment boy band The Wanted to hand out the honor of best female video, which went to Nicki Minaj. Not someone to wear anything understated, she was sporting some tweety bird yellow hair and a gaga-esque jumpsuit.
.

.
Two Chainz took it off the chain (see what we did there?!) with his first-ever VMA performance, where he was joined by Lil’ Wayne (who left his headphones elsewhere).
.

.
The most awkwardly dressed duo of all time, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller intro’ed the dudes from Green Day (including a recently hospitalized Billie Joe Armstrong), who proved that no matter how much time has passed, they can still rock hard. In true punk rock fashion, they invited the audience to join them in a mosh pit. And it was f*cking awesome. Long live Green Day, y’all.
.

.
IT’S TWILIGHT TIME, Y’ALL. The cast of ‘Breaking Dawn Pt. 2′ took to the podium to present an exclusive FIRST LOOK at the film. Noticeably absent? Kristen Stewart, who’s too busy living in her shame cloud to be bothered. Sorry, K Stew. You caught a bit of a rough break on this one…
.
Ke$ha. Was she even recognizable? She really didn’t look herself tonight. She joined Wiz Khalifa (who’s expecting a child with Amber Rose any moment) to present the Best New Artist golden popcorn to the real fab five, One Direction. Could these guys BE any cuter? Nope. Nope they couldn’t.
.

.
The fierce five re-emerged, looking (and sounding!) just as precious as ever, presenting the lovely Alicia Keys, who brought new son Egypt to the show (dad is Swizz Beats). She sounded a little pitchy (as did everyone!) but her new jam is gonna be huge, and she looked incredible. Her girl Nicki Minaj joined her for an interlude (when was Nicki Minaj NOT onstage at this show?!) and even Gabby Douglas got some stage time, doing a few tricks and tumbles! It was awesome. You go, Gabby. You go.
.

.

.
Kevin came back to present the final award of the night, which went to our girl Ri Ri for “We Found Love,” which caused everyone to freak OUT. And she looked beyond lovely. BEYOND.
.

.
Who better to close out the show than the lovely Taylor Swift? She belted out her mega-smash new single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” with some adorably dressed gymnasts accompanying her. Girlfriend nailed it. And that is a straight up jam. Jam-tastic.
.

.
And that’s a wrap! We’re sad to close the book on another VMA’s, but it was as fun as ever. Plus, thanks to MTV’s new gif technology, we can have it all at our fingertips forever! Check out the full list of winners below!
