‘The Voice’ Shakes Up Format, May Allow New Judges

The Voice seems to have found a pretty successful format, with its four judges sitting in four swiveling chairs, but it looks like the reality singing show is preparing to shake things up a bit. The upcoming third season will revamp the show’s format and may be the last time the four judges – Cee Lo Green, Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine – appear together on the show.

The show, which premieres September 10 on NBC, has added a new element to its engine. This element, called “The Steal,” will come into play after a coach has cut a contestant. This cut contestant will now become fair game for the other judges to snag for their own teams. This means that the show will begin as usual, with each judge making a team of 16 during the blind audition. It will continue into the battle rounds, where the teams drop to eight contestants. Here’s the difference: During the battle rounds each judge will get to add two discarded singers to their teams.

How will the teams get whittled down again? The show is introducing the “Knock-Out Round” where each singer performs a track of their choosing in the boxing ring. The winners move on to the live shows. Levine told reporters, “It’s a brilliant piece of TV.” Host and producer Carson Daly added, “It becomes an incentive to look at your team and the rest of the league.”

The real shift is yet to come, though. Producer Mark Burnett has hinted that these four judges may not hold their thrones past the third season. He said, “It’’s your seat for life. If someone goes on tour, they can help bring in another coach… This is the producers’ nightmare… They have tour dates and they have an obligation to their fans.” This all means that next season may see new judges in the red chairs, but ultimately these four will be back. Although it may not be at the same time.
